12 years ago I built a PC that worked for… 12 years. The mainboard died recently so I have to build a new one. So, I started to document myself.
CPU
I am interested in single-core high-frequency CPU because I will use the PC mostly to compile Delphi code. I have found some charts that compare the CPU value (speed divided by price) and AMD Ryzen 7 7800X seems the best.
Here is the CPU selection guide.
Motherboard
CPU selection was relatively easy. The mainboard is a different story. For the mainboard I compiled a color-coded list of boards based on the new x870 chipset. The table is an extension of this one.

x870 vs x670
Now I am wondering if it really worth paying double for the new x870 chip-set since it is bringing very little (almost zero) value.
- x870 brings USB 4.0 and WiFi7 (though these might be available also on x670 main boards.
- B650 still offer the best value while being fully capable of supporting the new Ryzen 9000 CPUs.
- If USBĀ 4.0 is needed and you have an old board, it may be more cost-effective to buy a USBĀ 4.0 add-in card.
- The new X870 supports higher memory frequencies (with Ryzen 9000 in mind), but the increase in freq is only minor.
- The chipset has nothing to do with controls for audio, networking, and additional PCI-e or USB ports, speaker headers, seven-segment displays, and dual-BIOS or BIOS flashback support. So, x870 has no words to say in this!
I think we can summarize that x870 is not worth its money. Not at this price.
